Immigration Nation
Divergent Paths
Second Chance
The Unexpected
A New Vernacular
Survival of the Fittest
A Deepening Sense

We live in a time of profound polarization on the subject of immigration. Paradoxically, with the exception of Native Americans and people forcibly displaced to the United States through slave trades, every person in the United States has immigrant roots. Yet, many U.S. citizens have seemingly forgotten that generations ago, their forefathers were also immigrants who were leaving home in search of new beginnings. This disconnection, coupled with persistent racial stereotypes that continue to fuel institutional racism, creates a disparity in our fundamental views of immigration. Our nation's ideological divide has created a gap so large that the prospect of a truly United States can seem far off. However, we are not powerless in bridging this divide. There is no quick fix to solving our deeply rooted social and economic inequities, but art has the power to ignite lasting changes in perception and create a sense of unity.

Immigration Nation is contemporary art with a purpose. It carries a two-fold message: a celebration of the United States' rich immigrant history, as well as recognition and empathy for current immigrant struggles. In a time when immigration policy has become a heart-wrenching political topic, Porter (the great grandson of Lebanese, Greek, Italian and English immigrants) felt compelled to reclaim the uniting power of the word immigrant.

Since its inception, the American-born jazz idiom has always welcomed the diversity of its multi-cultural constituents. A music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans found a way to express the values of democracy more perfectly than any nation has ever achieved. Through a balance of form and improvisation, the practitioners of jazz not only found a way to work together, despite their differences, but to also cultivate unique identities.

Upon it's release, ten percent of all future album sales of Immigration Nation will be donated to the International Rescue Committe (IRC), to help refugees survive, recover and rebuild their lives.
